🔐 The Job

You've been hired as a security consultant. The vault's owner wants to know exactly how many codes their system allows — get the count wrong, and you'll either miss a real vulnerability or waste money fixing one that isn't there. Precision matters. Let's start with their current system.

Task 1a — The current code

The vault's code is 4 characters long. Each character is a digit from 0–9, and repeats are allowed — 0000 and 1231 are both valid codes. How many different codes are possible? Show your reasoning clearly enough that someone else could follow it.

Task 1b — Scaling up

The owner is considering a longer code — 6 characters instead of 4, same rules. How many codes now? Can your group write a general rule for a code of any length \(n\)?
